history
Grozești lies on the banks of the Prut River. Legend has it that the original founders were so surprised by the abrupt cliff created by the powerful waters of the Prut that they exclaimed, "grozavie" which means "how marvellous!"
Another legend tells us that the original residents, with the family name Grozinea, had 11 children. When the children matured they remained in the village with their families and worked the land. As you can imagine, this eventually expanded the size of the village. They were the 'Adam and Eve' of Grozești.
If you were to read the history books, they would tell you that the village was founded in 1479 by Lord Groza as a proud farming community, as it remains to this day. Eighty percent of the people make their living growing sunflowers, wheat, or corn. It is very difficult for a small farmer to make ends meet when their crops are at the mercy of Mother Nature and they must compete with larger mechanised markets. With the advent of the new irrigation system, a bright future awaits Grozești. The system is due to be completed by 2015. At that time farmers will begin to transition to organic, sustainable methods of production and high value crops.
